Second annual SIMposium offers expert insights into simulation-based education

Simucase hosted its second annual SIMposium virtual networking event on Sept. 20, 2024. 

Simucase SIMposium: Fostering Excellence - Developing Core Competencies Through Simulation, offered faculty the opportunity to network and expand their knowledge of how simulation-based education can enhance their curricula and clinical training. 

Participants got a peek at new Simucase content and participated in the breakout session of their choice. Breakout sessions were led by experts in audiology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, social work, speech-language pathology, and career readiness. 

Nearly 500 faculty and representatives from universities across the country registered for the free event.

“We were thrilled to welcome faculty from across the country for a second year and demonstrate how simulations can support their curriculum,” said Katie Ondo, MA, CCC-SLP, CHSE, Vice President of Simucase. “Hearing firsthand from faculty about how they are utilizing the content within their curriculum was very powerful and provided opportunities for great discussion within the Q&A session.” 

Featured breakout sessions and expert guest speakers included: 

• Using Audiolab and Simulated Learning to Enhance Undergraduate Audiology Education: Activities and Outcomes with Lauren Calandruccio, PhD, CCC-A, Case Western Reserve University, and Peter Wasiuk, AuD, PhD, CCC-A, Southern Connecticut State University 

• Student Response to Varied Instructional Methods in Level I Fieldwork Experiences with Camille Turner, EdD, MSOT, OTR/L, Belmont University

• Learning is Not a Spectator Sport so Let's Play! How to Fully Leverage Simucase in an OT Case-Based Discussion Course with Carrie Roberts, OTD, OTR/L, Keuka College 

• Lines, Tubes, and Oxygen, Oh My: Utilizing Simulation to Improve Student Confidence in the Acute Cardiopulmonary Clinical Environment with Megan Kim, PT, DPT, ATC, LAT, Nova Southeastern University

• Beyond the Simulation: Using Extension Activities to Improve Competency and Facilitate Skill Generalization with Rebecca Lulai, MA, CCC-SLP, University of Minnesota 

• Innovative Instructional Strategies: Incorporating Computer-Based Simulations in Social Work Curriculum with Atensia Earp Bowen, LCSW, Florida Atlantic University 

• Utilizing Interactive Simulations and Videos for Career Readiness with Clint Johnson, MA, CCC-SLP, CHSE, Simucase, and Maura Lavelle, MS, OTR/L, CHSE, Simucase

“The SIMposium was such a refreshing event for people like me who are light users of Simucase,” said Marcia Choi, MSc.
